Recently, a discussion started on the internet about the way FOX NEWS
portrays Amsterdam. Last week it entered a new phase, when a second video
was published in reaction to FOX NEWS anchorman Bill O’Reilly ‘s Cultural
Warrior segments. AMSTERDAM VERSUS O’REILLY PART 2 dispels the untrue
statements O’Reilly continues to make about Amsterdam.
How It began
At the end of July 2009, Elian Wils and Robbert Nieuwenhuijs released a
video called THE TRUTH ABOUT AMSTERDAM in response to THE O’REILLY
FACTOR’S broadcast of December 8th 2008. This particular episode of THE
O’REILLY FACTOR caused a lot of commotion with inhabitants of Amsterdam,
in it Amsterdam was depicted as a “cesspool of crime and corruption”.
Hence it didn’t take long for Elian and Robbert’ s video response to
become extremely popular and heavily discussed on blogs and in the media.
To top it all off, Bill O’Reilly personally responded to their video a few
days after its release. In a new Fox broadcast on American national
television he made reference to their video and again sold the city of
Amsterdam short by uttering all sorts of inaccuracies, by misquoting and
having strange trails of thought.
In their turn Elian and Robbert responded to Bill’s claims and again
showed the “true facts” in their video AMSTERDAM VERSUS O’REILLY PART 2
which can be seen on youtube and on their own website www.truthaboutamsterdam.com.
Why
According to its makers this video is not just for Bill O’Reilly or Fox,
but for everybody who links ‘Amsterdam’ to ‘sex and drugs’. They aim to
show that Amsterdam’s liberal drug and prostitution policy has created
many pre-assumptions about the city worldwide. They see TV host Bill
O’Reilly as one of the most hilarious representatives of these false ideas
and tried to give a more realistic view of Amsterdam.
All video’s, user uploaded video’s and forum discussions can be found on www.truthaboutamsterdam.com, a website launched for people to share their
perspectives on the truth about Amsterdam. With this website Elian and
Robbert hope the discussion will continue to grow and that others will be
inspired to come up with their own Truth about Amsterdam video, showing us
and the world what they think it’s really like.
