People like Bill O'Reilly keep saying that Holland, and Amsterdam in particular, have huge drug and crime problems. Supposedly this is all because marijuana is legal here.
Let's set things straight: Cannabis is not legal in the Netherlands! It is a rather complicated situation, but I will do my best to clear it up here.
It remains a controlled substance in the Netherlands and both possession and production for personal use are misdemeanors, punishable by fine.
However, a policy of non-enforcement has led to a situation where reliance upon non-enforcement has become common, and because of this the courts have ruled against the government when individual cases were prosecuted. There is an official set of guidelines telling public prosecutors under which circumstances offenders should not be prosecuted.
The criminality problems that arrise because of drugs would dissappear if the government would choose to totally legalize drugs. Then everything could be controlled by the government and criminals would not have a chance. Unfortunately it is because of the pressure that narrow-minded governments in surrounding countries, that we are not able to do this. In fact the moderately Christian government that we now have are talking about making cannabis illegal.
In short; it would solve a lot of problems if soft-drugs were legalized. This would prefereably take place on a European level, so the drug market can be controlled on a European level.
