My name is Deb, from the UK and I am going to be in Amsterdam the first weekend of October. I was wondering if people have any suggestions on where to go besides the obvious museums like the van Gogh museum.

Deb, you will have a blast in Amsterdam. It's a great city in which to just chill out and walk around! There's so much to see!
Some suggestions:
The Botanical Garden is one of the oldest and is nice on a sunny day; there's an exceptional cafe after you visit the gardens and hot houses. It's in the eastern part of the city; you would cross the Amstel river to get there. http://www.hortus-botanicus.nl/Index.asp

There are a lot of nice cafes and restaurants. I have three favourites I try to visit when I am in Amsterdam.
