The link between Amsterdam and the United States is etched in history and since we just celebrated the 400th year of this bond, it is most important to put O'Reilly in his place.
To anyone who understands history, Amsterdam's gift to the world was New Amsterdam, which begat New York City. This is wonderfully described in Russell Short's great book, The Island at the Center of the World.
To those who attribute what Bill O'Reilly said to Right-wing Americans, I have to insist that he does not represent the views of anyone in America, except himself, and the fact that he is a loudmouthed egotist who doesn't mind making a fool of himself on television should not be ignored. What should be ignored is O'Reilly.
Amsterdam is one of the world's most beautiful cities. Its people are wonderful and energetic. The vibe there is positive and friendly.
But, let's not let the secret out. I wouldn't want a lot of tourists to ruin it.
