I have traveled on vacation to many European cities on vacation, and I must say, that Amsterdam is the most beautiful, and the most friendly. I didn't go there because of the stories I heard about sex, drugs, and debauchery, but the windmills, the tulips, and the history of the country. Having said this, I have a different explanation for the popularity of Fox News also called “Faux (fake) News” in America. First of all, people must remember that their most popular product is fear. Americans have turned into a very paranoid and fearful people, and they only pay attention to things that reinforce that fear, or things that make them afraid of things they were never afraid of before. Everyday, Fox News starts off with some terrible event, a crime, or natural disaster, then they try to imply that it can happen to you next, or that if it does happen to you, the current government, the Democrats, either caused it, or will not help you. They try to impose on their audience, a sense of helplessness, and that only they have the right answers. Second, many of the “newsmen and women” are not really journalists…they are just attractive people who read whatever is placed in front of them. Not being journalists frees them from the burden being honest or unbiased. Third, many of the people you see on Fox have little or no higher education. Sean Hannity and Karl Rove for example, like Glenn Beck and many of the other frequent guests on Fox, are college dropouts. Some of the others who did manage to graduate from college, have their degrees in totally unrelated areas, or immigrated to Fox News, after disgracing themselves elsewhere, and Fox was the only network that would hire them. This allows them to deliver a very simplistic, relatable message to their audience, without the need for careful analysis, verification or promoting skepticism. For example, when they say” President Obama is a socialist,” even though 99.9% of Americans don't know what a socialist it, the way it was said ( like saying “child molester”) it must be something bad, so they hear it, and repeat it. If you don't believe me, ask the next American you meet, what a “socialist” is. To be fair, if you are asking an American in your country, he or she is likely to be much better educated than the Americans you see on television, but I'll take that chance. Guest presenters such as Oliver North (convicted felon) Mark Furhman (convicted felon), G. Gordon Liddy (convicted felon), Greta von Susteren (disgraced former lawyer from West Virginia), Geraldo Rivera (need I say more), or disgraced politicians (Newt Gingrich), constantly pound home one message...be afraid...be very afraid. Americans have the gift of amnesia, and forget they would never allow any of these people to watch their children. Bill O'Reilly an alleged phone sex pervert, lost a sexual harassment lawsuit a few years ago and either he or Fox had to pay a huge settlement. Dick Morris, an alleged a toe-sucking pervert who's only job is to attack President Obama, gets plenty of airtime from Fox, because he is the least concerned about his personal shortcomings or reputation. Fox diverts your attention from the damage the Republicans have done to our country, by telling you that your house is on fire, or soon will be.

Let me ask you to do one thing. Anyone you see on Fox News, just “Google” their name. Chances are, they are a disgruntled politician, disgraced former military, or are just one step ahead of some criminal or moral scandal, and Fox News is the only television station (cable) that will allow them to vent their frustration, and only at President Obama or the Democrats. Fox News is obsessed with minority crime, and continually hold themselves up as paragons of virtue, patriotism, and godliness, when nothing could be further from the truth. If however, you are a fearful bigot stories like the one on Amsterdam makes you feel morally superior to other people, and justifies your ever increasing paranoia, and fear of people who are different.

Most of Fox's audience have never traveled out of the country, and many have never lived more than 100 miles from where they were born. President Obama's recent victory in 2008, indicates a shift in attitudes, and the Republican Party, afraid of never regaining power, having abused it so much, are relentlessly lashing out in every direction, at anyone, or anything, that reflects this shift. They attacked Canada for nearly one year straight for their medical system. I mean, really, who attacks Canada? They have yet to demonstrate how our medical system is superior to any other system in the world.

Finally, I wouldn't pay much attention to Fox News. No matter what you say, they will twist it against you, and their viewers will just have more reasons for believing them. It is correct though, to tell your side of the story, and denounce the source of misinformation, so that Fox doesn't come back accuse you of “attacking the American media.” Bill O'Reilly has some obvious problems with his own inner morality, that I believe he struggles with every day. If you watch his show, almost every three days, he does some lurid expose on some sex scandal, complete with scantily-clad young women, with the naughty parts blurred out. Then he plays the segment over and over again, like he's so surprised and shocked, and tries to get his buxom, blond co-anchors to laugh at his sleazy comments. He's a classic “dirty old man,” and I'd keep my children away from him.

I believe that Fox is popular with people who have a need to be 'told what to think'. That group who never heard, or never understood the phrase, "Never believe everything that you read in the paper."

Faced with the prospect of just hearing the facts from multiple sources and making up their own minds is too much for these viewers.

Why there has been no 'Truth in Advertising' complaint, is beyond me. FOX NEWS?????? More like, Fox OPINION.

All reporting of news has a bias of some sort. It is inevitable human nature. However, a good organization will do its best to minimize that.

I'd be tempted to say that FOX and their viewers a a little retarded, but Sarah says I can't. Unless, of course, my name where Rush.

A few things to realize, here;

This was from Chicago. Where the phrase, 'Vote early and vote often' is popular.

It's gotta be tough to be Fox News in a city where the last Republican mayor left office in 1931.

I was born just outside Chicago and live near Amsterdam. So, this 'strikes home' in several levels.

Oh, and I never watch Fox, except when it's part of The Daily Show.

Cheers!

I can't believe people believe anything that comes from Fox News. I visited Amsterdam for Christmas in 2008 and had the one of the best experiences of my life. I felt safer there than any city in America I have lived in. The vibe that generates from this city is of joy and happyness. Healthy looking folks that are truly happy and smiling families on bikes that you woud'nt see in say.... New York. People who sit in judgement of others without first experiencing what they are talking about sould'nt be listened to anyway. I am planning on returning soon. I am tired of the government (US) telling me how I should live my life and I am searching for a truly free place to live with the Netherlands and Canada being high on my list. I love my country but I do not love what it has become. I only hope the examples of places like Amsterdam will someday break thru to the US. I won't hold my breath though.

Fox NEWS really isn't as popular as people think. FOX is essentially the only republican TV network, devoted to that mentality (religion, family "values" (no gays), anti-pot, anti-public health care, anti-progress). The republicans constantly blast every other media outlet for being liberal on the issues.

So in essence, virtually all American media tends to be very liberal and very different from FOX (at least Fox is by far the worst). All the douchey' republicans flock to that one station, so it climbs in the ratings compared to the "liberal" news shows that you see on every other channel..

Well, it's not that easy to sue people or institutes for this kind of a reason, because of Hollands strong believe in "freedom of speech". But various politicians and media journalists have stood up and tried to confront mister O'Reilly, who's been very sillent about Amsterdam all of a sudden. As long as he knows the Dutch are listening....and acting if needed.

I was born and raised in The Netherlands and last year moved to Seattle, WA. You couldn't be more right about Fox New. Just watching a few days clearly demonstrates how biased they are. They certainly show the opposite of “fair, accurate & balanced news”. Similar BTW to MSNBC, which I consider the left-wing version of Fox. It is equally unbiased and annoying to watch (especially Rachel Maddow, which is the lefty female version of Bill O'reilly).

Your videos are therefore very appreciated. It helps balance these rather extreme views. It also helps change the common perception in the USA that Amsterdam is all about drugs, gays, hookers and pickpockets. I sat next to an American in the plane and he refused to ever make a visit to Amsterdam. He was afraid that he was going to be robbed or hurt when doing that. The words of O'reilly have a big impact on many Americans that don't know any better, so more videos please!

That said, I must say that living in the USA for a year did show me what is wrong with Amsterdam and The Netherlands in general. My reference is Washington State (not the whole USA) but what I experienced in our daily life is that people are much more respectful and polite towards each other. Little things suddenly are much more enjoyable because of the high service levels and customer centric approach. But also because of the greater respect for others. You can go to a movietheater here without being annoyed by other guests that speak out loud or make a phonecall. People here also seem to be more responsible than in The Netherlands. For example: they drive slowly if they see children, they stop for you at zebra crossings and they let you merge in traffic without any middle finger or honking horn. Things that are long gone in The Netherlands. The declining values (normen en waarden) was one of the reasons we decided to leave.

I would rate the safety on the streets in Seattle is higher than Amsterdam. I have yet to run into a person that tries to sell me drugs (“psst: coke, hashies?”) and there is a total lack of annoying youngsters that make remarks or insult you. It just feels more safe.

I still love The Netherlands but it would be nice to see a litle less liberalism and a little more realism going forward.

All good points, but i still have to point one thing out.

I live in the Netherlands, but NOT in Amsterdam. Why the hell are people still looking only towards Amsterdam? I know its not a big country but come on... its bigger then Amsterdam. Saying that the values are not that high compared to the USA could be true, i dont know. Ive only visited the USA for two weeks. All i know is that we people in the east (where i live) on rural grounds are very polite as well and we dont rush through the city centre where children are playing.

People from America, please please please look beyond Amsterdam. Its not the only thing here.
