I’m a singer-songwriter from Canada. I and my partner have toured into Amsterdam on four trips. Neither of us is interested in drug culture nor have we been to the “coffeeeshops.” There is so much beautiful architecture, art, music and the people are warm and welcoming. It has become our favourite city in Europe. It is so much more culturally rich and intriguing than the picture O’Reilly paints!

This makes me think a bit about Holland’s Mr Wilders. Shout loudly and controversially about unsubstantiated facts and they become true. Just check out the bush election results reported by fox. O’rielly basically does Holland a favour by discouraging narrow minded blinkered americans from visiting and polluting our ears with tales of how great it is to be a god fearing robot. Good on him for that :)

I live in holland and agree with most peoples arguments above but why give this propoganda so much publicity just add it to your comedy lists on youtube (preferably right next to Fatima)?

Bill O’Reilly is so typical of conservative american. Lets be honest he’s not the worlds most educated person in world politics and never will be. He has a typical American attitude where the big U.S.A politics and views are paramount. Mr O’Rielly needs to understand there are many countries in this world with their own legal systems. If he just stretched his understanding on certain subjects and did more background research instead of opening that big mouth of his and spilling out unfounded comments on global issues he may have a more focused debate on the issues at hand. Ive been to Amsterdam four times in my life and to make out the city is full of drugs, organised crime and is out of control is unfounded rubbish Amsterdam has no more organised crime than other european cities. The issue at hand is Mr O’Reilly is stating that tolerance to soft drugs and Prostitution has a increase in organised crime in Amsterdam which is not true. Amsterdam may have a high rate of organised crime but this has no relation to the tolerence of soft drugs and prostition. If coffeshops are monitored and licenced how does this in relation help towards the statistics of organised crime ? question is the same for prostition if you take it out of the Black Market surely that decreases organised crime. Intresting debate shame Mr O.reilly doesn’t research the topic better and present his dicussion as a more educated presenter rather than holding a half founded personal attack on the dutch way of Politics. Just because you dont agree on another persons/ countries way of life or thinking doesnt mean its wrong !!!

1st, Bill O’Reilly is not representative of most educated, well-traveled Americans.

2nd – Sadly, educated, well-traveled Americans are not the majority of Americans

Those things being said, I have traveled to the Netherlands 4 times now. I remember my first trip like it was yesterday. I had no idea what I would find and knew very little about the person with whom I would be staying. My first thought about the place, made shortly after leaving Schipol was how familiar and connected I felt to the place. After spending 2 weeks with an almost total stranger that first thought was only reinforced. I was taken to almost every corner of the country and was treated like family by EVERYONE I met…not one of them stoned or standing in a window selling sexual favors. Several of those people have become very close and treasured friends over the intervening years.

My second trip was during a Queensday event. Never have I been surrounded by so many people, many of the very intoxicated, but not one of them acting anything but friendly and respectful of everyone around them. We were crowded into small streets, elbow to elbow – and sometimes closer – and the thought that kept coming to mind was that no one was being out-of-control or unruly and that there was absolutely no reason to need police. In fact, I rarely see police when I’m in the Netherlands.

I feel safer when I visit the Netherlands than I do anywhere else in the world…including my own home in an upscale neighborhood in Durham, NC!!!!

Everyone in the Netherlands is quick to speak English when they hear that I’m not speaking Dutch. In fact, that’s the subject of one of my favorite stories about my visits there. I was once in the Bijenkorf in Den Haag and was a little nervous that everyone was speaking Dutch. I need help finding my size for some pants and was a little hesitant about asking the salesperson for help. Shortly after I did ask for help, I noticed that EVERYONE in the entire store had switched to English! I’ve never worried about that again.

As I have returned again and again, I have fallen in love with the country and all of its many faces. I have friends that have come to be more like family than most of my relatives and my heart will forever be divided between Holland and the US. “Those people” that O’Reilly speaks with such contempt have proven themselves to be among the most loving and caring people I know and it hurts me deeply that he can be so calous and malicious with his comments.

I hope all of the people of Amsterdam and of all of the Netherlands know that they are more than welcome to visit here and that few Americans will greet you with the attitude that he expresses.

Many thanks to Robbert and his partner for responding with such ferocity towards these horrible comments and congratulations on your award. The diversity population of Holland is always a breath of fresh air and a welcome change of pace to me and if I could, I’d move in a heartslaag.

    !HUP HOLLAND!

This is typical for (extreme) right wing people. They will roar all kinds of accusations and degrading things about liberal politics and people, without any substantiation. And when the figures show them clearly wrong, they will deny the figures and roar louder, repeating their story. God forbid that people like these ever come to power.

As an immigrant to the Netherlands from the UK who has travelled to and worked in the US, I can only say that that Bob is right and O’Reilly is definitely wrong.

In addition to the examples already used in the videos, The Netherlands offers a lot of other examples to the rest of the world.

The country has one of the lowest teenage pregnancy rates in the world (11.6 per thousand women vs. 75 per thousand in the US, so few criminals that prisons are closing down (or lending their prison cells to other countries, and of course the safest roads in the world too.

Keep up the good work with these very well made videos.

Well done to the film-maker for countering such right wing nonsense so eloquently.
I agree about the pragmatism point.
Drugs and sex for sale do exist in society.
You have to bring them it inside the community rather than trying to pretend it doesn’t exist.

    Hi there.
I am an Indian and working in Amsterdam on a contract. I came to Amsterdam thinking of it as the drug and sex capital of world. But sincerely Amsterdam is not what it is so notorious for. It is the most beautiful place. The people are very friendly. And except for petty thefts and pick pockets, I have never witnessed any violence.
If anybody says that Amsterdam is corrupt and anarchic, well either they do not know what they are saying or they have been paid to do it. This false propaganda is shameful and uncalled for. Come visit Amsterdam and feel the beauty of it every minute of the day.
Every week there is some festival or concert or exhibition and countless other things to do. If you can only see marijuana smoke and red windows, then you came only for that. Do not blame Amsterdam if you can not step out of the RLD.
Thank You Amsterdam for a few of the best moments in my life.

@Shane It’s a shame you had such a bad time in Amsterdam but maybe it’s because you were looking in the wrong places. Why not instead of the red light district and the coffee shops visit the lovely canals, the van gogh museum and the ‘Jordaan’ district?

Would be the same I went to any American metropolitan area and hung out in the project neighbourhoods there.

There is no defending Bill. Republicans like him tend to hear what they want to hear and pay no attention to the truth. An interesting stat that I would like to hear is what percentage of FOX viewers have ever traveled outside of the US as a tourist. What percentage of FOX viewers have ever traveled outside of North America as a tourist? What percentage has a passport? I’ll guess rather low…. but it would be an interesting stat.

Bill unfortunately echo’s this attitude that I see in the US that everything is best in the US. Nothing is better or works better in other countries. If given the chance then EVERYONE would want to move to the US. There is complete inability for republicans to admit that something can work better in a country other than US. The US has NOTHING to learn from others. One need only look at the health care debate in the US to see the inability to learn from other countries.

Let me start by saying I love the Netherlands; Amsterdam, Haarlem, the Haage. I like the culture and i love the history. If there wasn’t an America i would be living in the Netherlands. But since there is I always have a place to take a vacation (once a year). I must say to the Dutch “I am sorry about Bill” but be easy on the rest of us. Most of us love and admire your way of life. Bill…isn’t that short for “Dick”…just my opinion. He is entitled to his opinions…”wrong” as they may be. He loves to label people and places, and does it with a straight face?! Then he wonders why Rap artist and entire countries can’t stand him. I guess it’s all about the ratings. He lites the fire and seemingly we walk right into it. My question is; why would you even allow yourself to be part of the big “O” show? You know he is an opinionated “@$$” that loves to hear himself talk. Does it actually have to be said that if your invited on and you haven’t been to his house for dinner you probably will be dinner!?

Nice to see O’rileys reaction here.. in all comfort he’s diggin his own grave even his co-workers look at him like “you must be a complete idiot” hahaha
but then again.. who watches fox news.. you must be a total idiot (with all respect ofcourse) if you believe what they show on TV
It’s strange how americans can complain about the Netherlands when without “us” they would not even be “there”.. maybe they should do sumtin about their public education system and smarten up the people.. (ooooh.. that’s not possible then our whole theatric democracy would be exposed ^_^)

    but..

The Netherlands is a savehaven for criminals at it has always been.. what about our export statistic? XTC being number one for years
and real criminals don’t kill people cuz they are the ones collectin ur tax money and you’re worth nothing to them if ur dead :-D JK

    Hi, i lived in America for almost 4 years straight, i have a dutch nationality. All i can say is , i lived in detroit and I’ve been for long term in Amsterdam. First of;
I dont’t see terrorist attacks here and people getting blown there heads of by a sniper guy. What i do see here is that Amsterdam is liberal and by being this liberal it gives all kinds of people the chance just to live there own life in stead of following one leader that bargens with oil and is destroying is own young generation by sending them away to Irak of Afghanistan. If this guy want’s to work out good influence amoungst his people and the world why not go take a look in Israel where people are getting shot at with the reason of a jew book that prenounces that Isreal is there country. If i would by a book and write in it that the US would be my country i would have 3 billion jews hanging around me and trying to shoot me because of defending there religious believes. Bill aint worth a penny if it comes to arguing on a mutual level if you ask me. discussions are won by facts ! and not by opinions!

I spent 48 hours in Amsterdam recently and in that time frame…

We toured the Red Light District which did not exude class or elegance… just sleaze and the exploitation of women.

We went into coffee houses where tourists just get blitzed out of their minds… the Dutch may not partake too much, but making it legal has made it a Mecca for stoners globally and is not a nice scene.

Our hotel was broken in to, with passports/cash/credit cards stolen.

A girl we were travelling with was hit by a car, after which a large crowd gathered to TAKE PICTURES of a friend who was lying on the ground with two broken legs.

We also visited the Heineken Brewery… OK that was pretty awesome.

Long story short, Amsterdam is a terrible city to visit for a short period because the crime and sleaze and tourist-stoners destroy the first impression. I haven’t been there long term so I can’t comment.

O’Reilly is an idiot. As a (North) American living here, I don’t see a liberal city. I see a pragmatic city realizing that banning drugs and prostitution does not work. Fact is, Amsterdam is trying to get Unesco World Heritage status (which means big bucks for the city). That is what is behind the coffee shop and red light clean up.

Bill O’Reilly is pathetic; he likes to think he’s a good debator, but all he does is talk loudly and quickly to cut people off. It actually makes me feel bad for Americans, because they might all be tarred with the same brush if O’Reilly keeps it up. And I know I definitely wouldn’t want to be thought of as an intolerant rightwing liar simply because of the country I’m from.

I visited Amsterdam a few years and it was an absolutely gorgeous city; I’ve been waiting for my chance to go back and just booked my holiday there for next year. I’ve still got so much sightseeing to do, I can’t wait!

I’ll see you next year, Amsterdam, and I guess we can be glad Bill O’Reilly thinks it’s a “cesspit of crime”.. it means he’ll never pollute it with his presence :)

Bill O’Reilly is an embarrassment to the American people and to the American media. He represents so much of what is wrong with this country and he provides a forum for twisting the truth and for bolstering the conservative population’s incorrect and unfounded, often bigoted and ignorant positions.

Do a little background on O’Reilly and you’ll see how unqualified this man is to make the kinds of statements he does. He is a fool, and unfortunately he is a fool with a big megaphone and a lot of people who nod in agreement with him.

I am sad and a bit angry to see how much of my country he misleads. And worse, that he probably knows it.

How sad that this is how America is represented when Bill O’Reilly speaks. America is a wonderful place to live, but our politics has turned us into a polarizing nation. I was fortunate to visit Amsterdam in 2004, and it was an amazing, beautiful city. I can’t wait to return to Amsterdam, and the quaint city of Haarlem with a beautiful church across from the hotel we stayed in. I have treasured memories from my time in your city, and I fully support your effort. You two totally rock!

Bill O’Reilly doesn’t hate Amsterdam, Bill O’Reilly hates liberal no matter where he finds it. And yet he slanders your city and your people and he has no accountability for his lies. Why does FOX NEWS Corp allow this dreck on the air? Because it makes money.

I am from Boston USA and I don’t watch FOX NEWS because of three despicable broadcasters who are net hold accountable for telling lies; O’Reilly, Hannity and Glenn Beck. If the FCC is not gong to do anything about it, we must take it into our own hands.

The most effective thing to do is pressure the advertisers on O’Reilly show to remove their advertising. Ask them to advertise on Shep Smith’s show instead or another network but not on O’Reilly.

Americans are doing this successfully to another FOX NEWS broadcaster named Glenn Beck. Beck is on a campaign to convince the American public that President Obama’s agenda is about serving the needs of Black communities at White people’s expense. It’s repulsive, divisive and shouldn’t be on the air. So far 57 advertisers have agreed to remove their advertisements from Glenn Beck. It takes work but it’s worth it. http://www.colorofchange.org

Remember, FOX NEWS Corp doesn’t give one wit about the truth, they care only about the money,

I was in Amsterdam last December – My husband and I are American, and prior to our trip to Amsterdam, my husband had never been to Europe. I chose Amsterdam as our destination because having grown up overseas, I’d had layovers in Amsterdam many times, and was always so impressed with the beauty of the city, ease of transport, and the friendliness of the locals (it also doesn’t hurt that most of you are fluent in English, which should really raise some comparisons between the monolingual American population and the polyglot Dutch).

    Our top experiences in Amsterdam:
    1) 4-hour bike tour, which really gave us a chance to see the city from a local’s perspective (sorry for clogging up the lanes, though)
    2) Rijksmuseum (seeing The Milkmaid was an experience of a lifetime)
    3) Rijsttafel

All of these things are singularly Dutch, and none of them were the coffeeshops or the Red Light District.

Anyone who criticizes Amsterdam for being a den of sin or a playground for vice CLEARLY hasn’t ever been there. Fortunately, I believe that the majority of Americans are like my husband and I – openminded and appreciative of other cultures; I only beg the Dutch to not let the idiots at Fox News convince them that we all or even most of us feel this way.

    Bedankt!

LOL Well O’reilly has the right to find everything about Amsterdam horrible just like everyone else has the right to find everything about Fox horrible.
I just wish he’d shut the hell up and just never visit Holland, instead of spewing anti-dutch propaganda.

He even has the nerve to say “They do statistics differently in Holland”, which is A) bullshit, statistics are mathematical procedures and maths is the same all over the world, and B) irrelevent even if it were true, because the statistics came from an American study.

It is very odd how the Bush-republican US government has nothing but praise for the Netherlands when it comes to our willingness to join the “Coalition of the Willing” in their “War on Terror”, but when it comes to liberal politics and “the pursuit of happiness” the Bush-republican Fox “news” propaganda network has nothing but negative and contemptuous remarks on the country.

I guess they just can’t stand the fact that there is actually a country in the world where people have more freedoms and are more able to pursue their own happyness than the USA which claims to guarantee those rights as the very first clauses of their constitution.

And I suppose O’reilly also conveniently forgot that a major part of the socio-economic foundations for the United Stated to ever even become indpendant came from the Netherlands.
Manhattan was Dutch, Peter Stuyvesant was Dutch, Broadway, Wall Street, Coney Island, all originally Dutch (Breedestraat, Walstraat, Konyn Eiland). Roosevelt is a Dutch name. Those familiar ribbons that the Americans use at just about every official occasion, the ones with the red-white-blue? It’s the Dutch national flag!
The US constitution was based on those of France and Holland,
and the original even has a small Dutch flag at the bottom!

Seems to me O’reilly is just an ignorant old fart with an ass so tight you could squeeze oranges with it.
I hope he chokes in his lies.

I happened to run across an article on the NRC Handelsblad website which was basically a rebuttal of Mr. O’Reilly’s broadcast which stated “Amsterdam is a cesspool of corruption”.

I wonder if Mr. O’Reilly or any of his guests have guests ever actually spent any time in Amsterdam? Or, do they only report hearsay??

I have visited the A’Dam eleven times… and I find it to be one of my favorite cities – granted, the Dutch can appear to be somewhat rude — of course their population density could have something to do with it (sometimes people want to have their space, which is OK by me). However, A’Dam is a beautiful city with friendly people — who don’t carry guns or threaten visitors I might add.

Rudeness aside, A’Dam is the safest large city I’ve ever visited… unlike New York, Chicago, Minneapolis (my town) or any other large metro area in the U.S.. one can virtually walk anywhere, at any time of the day or night without fear of getting a thorough ass-kicking or shot.

As far as their drug use? O’Reilly is so far off base it’s sad… hard drugs are not tolerated at all — severe penalties are the norm. Smoking a joint? Very few Amsterdamers smoke pot… far less than in the U.S. And, prostitution? At least it’s in a controlled area — by the way, I’ve walked the Red LIght District late at night and have never had a problem with the underworld.

More people are murdered in America trying to buy a small amount of pot than are murdered in Amsterdam for all reasons…

It’s sad Mr. O’Reilly tried to portray Amsterdam as a decadent city — those of us who have spent a lot of time there can only shake our heads at his poor reporting. I’d much rather have controlled sale of pot – than see people shot for trying to buy a couple of grams for personal use.

U.S. laws regarding pot are ridiculous… the tens of billions of dollars we waste trying to enforce the unenforceable is a joke. In the Netherlands public money is spent on stopping hard drug use… drugs like cocaine and heroin, not on pot.

    O’Reilly disappointed me big time,

    Lance

P.S. – I was rolled in NYC on my last visit right next to the Port Authority at 10pm… thousands of people were close enough to stop it, but then again this is America.

I am so sick and tired of this O’Reilly guy. But think about it: he’s preaching to the choir. The only people who actually watch Fox are the people who agree with such ridiculous statements. The others who happen to even catch a glimpse of this story aren’t going to change their minds about Amsterdam being a nice place to visit.

Also to O’Reilly: what is this nonsense about Amsterdam? Amsterdam is not the only city in the Netherlands that has ‘liberal’ laws. In fact, there is no such thing as city/state laws as in the States. Please O’Reilly, get your stuff straight. Why don’t you grow some and take on the entire country of the Netherlands? Why don’t you generalize the whole country?? Get real man.

Super initiatief jongens! The best pimp on the block! En dan heb ik het dus over groep 6, he?! Dat heb ik in Amsterdam nog niet gehoord.
